Today, the Provincial Council of Groningen has agreed to make a first credit tranche to the amount of € 9.53 million available for the implementation phase of the Wunderline, the quality improvement project of the railway connection between Groningen and Bremen.
By implementing the Wunderline, the railway connection between Groningen and Bremen as well as between its intermediate areas shall be improved thus further increasing territorial, social as well as economic cohesion between the Province of Groningen and the Federal State of Lower Saxony. The Wunderline shall also contribute substantially to the sustainability and climate goals of the Province of Groningen.
“I very much welcome the Provincial Council’s support for the Wunderline. It seems the well-deserved crowning of a long lobbying and consultative process. By passing this decree regarding the implementation of Wunderline we have now – together with our project partners on both the Dutch as well as the German side of the border – created a unique momentum to press on. And that’s exactly what we intend to do!
On 7 February 2019 – in the small town of Winschoten at the Dutch-German border – we are signing the collaboration agreements, which will officially ensure the realisation of the Wunderline. I am looking forward to that moment and am proud that our efforts have led to this successful achievement”, Provincial Executive Member Henk Staghouwer stated.
The planning phase of the Wunderline has just recently been completed, resulting in a preferred solution which shall consist of three consecutive construction phases on both sides of the border. These construction phases are part of a Comprehensive Set of Measures. The official agreement regarding this Comprehensive Set of Measures is scheduled to be signed by the Steering Group members – the Federal State of Lower Saxony, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and the Province of Groningen – at the beginning of 2019.
