Wunderline GO

Quicker and more comfortable travel by train between Groningen and Bremen – that is one of the objectives of the Wunderline cross-border rail project. It will all become possible from 2024, though the railway now already has something special to offer: the Wunderline GO app.

Did you know that all of the municipalities along the Wunderline route have wondrous things waiting for you? From 24 June 2021, they can be discovered using the Wunderline GO app. Each municipality along the line has its own unique and wondrous aspect. Think in terms of a characteristic theme, a (historic) event, a famous person or a very special geographical feature, for example. They can all be collected along the 15 different routes, which transport you to the most beautiful places in Groningen, Central Groningen, Oldambt, Bunde, Weener, Westoverledingen, Leer, Jümme, Augustfehn, Westerstede, Bad Zwischenahn, Oldenburg, Hatten, Hude and Delmenhorst. What a fantastic fun way to (re)discover all the places along the line!

Exciting tour

In the app, an enthusiastic female conductor accompanies you on your route, to find all the wondrous things. A compass on your smartphone will navigate you to where you need to be. But take note: the compass only shows the direction and distance to your destination, you need to find your own way there. Along the route, information will be provided on your screen, which may be pictures, videos, audio or text. There’s also the chance to test your knowledge occasionally in a fun quiz. The ‘wonder tour’ becomes even more exciting when using Augmented Reality. This shows all the wondrous features in 3-D on your phone, to give you the feeling that they are actually in front of you. Would you like to revisit them later? No problem, as you can add them to your collection and take them home.

About the project

The Wunderline GO app was developed on the initiative of the municipalities along the line, with the purpose of increasing awareness of the region in general. The project is being supervised by the city of Oldenburg and carried out by Ostfriesland Tourismus GmbH and the province of Groningen/Wunderline project. The Quantumfrog company in Oldenburg is responsible for the development of the app. Wunderline was made possible thanks to the INTERREG V A-programme for Germany-Netherlands using resources from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD) and by the provinces of Drenthe, Fryslân and Groningen, as well as the German state of Lower Saxony, with contributions from the participating municipalities.

The Wunderline project is currently in the Implementation phase. The first actual construction phase will be completed in 2024, with the reopening of the Friesenbrücke. As it is not yet possible to travel over the Friesenbrücke, you can make use of the bus which replaces the train between Weener and Leer. More information on tickets can be found on the website of Niedersachsen Ticket (only in dutch and german).
