From 2018 onwards an express train will run during the morning rush hours from the small town of Winschoten to the city Groningen. The express train is about ten minutes faster than the slow train on this particular stretch. Possibly an extra platform will be added at Winschoten Station. In addition, the unguarded Winschoten Station railway crossing shall be converted into a guarded one. This additional express service does not require the purchase of additional trains.
The express train between the cities of Winschoten and Groningen, which only stops at Groningen Europapark and Hoogezand-Sappemeer Station, has been scheduled to run five times during the morning rush hours. The introduction of the express train shall bring the intended new and improved train connection between the cities of Groningen and Bremen a little closer to realisation.
