The Leer Railway Junction is approaching its capacity limit. Another thing is, that federated state of Niedersachsen has shown a clear desire for establishing better connecting options between all trains coming from the north, the south and the east.

Due to the above-mentioned plans, the timetabling on the tracks to and from the Leer Railway Junction was adjusted, making it necessary for trains to pass each other at different points on the single-track sections of the railway. In order to achieve an efficient flow a doubling of the track between Augustfehn and Stickhausen-Velde is the most likely option. At this point, the current timetables and their consequences are being examined by the LandesNahVerkehsGesellschaft (the German body which provides regional public transport services in Niedersachsen) and DB Netz (the German rail management body).
